We know, motivating yourself to hit the gym is hard. It’s hard to wake up early, leave the cosy confines of your blanket and bed, get dressed and then go to the gym.
However, every few weeks, we get this intense urge to get ourselves fit and get started on the road to being a healthier and fitter person. A few days later, though reality sets in and flattens our workout motivation like a pancake. Could be long working hours, long hours commuting, things beyond your control going haywire, but ultimately all we want at the end of a long day is an ice-cream or an ice-cold beer.
The old, ‘gym bag by the door’ certainly doesn’t work for everyone.
So here are a few unconventional ways to get you motivated and ensure that that motivation doesn’t fade away in the haze of your work or the trials and troubles of your daily life.
Weird Way #1
Remind Yourself How Insanely Busy You Are
You are insanely busy! Tomorrow, you’re going out after work to meet a friend and you can’t make it to the gym, the day after you have a client meeting and the day after that, you’ve booked yourself a ticket to a movie. In short, you’ll never find time to fit going to the gym in your schedule.
Thus, the only window you have is right now. Right now, this little patch of free time is all you have. So right now is when you go to the gym. It really is,
“Now or Never.”
Weird Way #2
Try Unabashed Bribery
Shopping for new workout clothes or shoes or other equipment might motivate you to hit the gym for the first few days, but you might want to take it a step further. Further, into the future!
Get your clothes delivered to the gym instead of your house. That way, you will show up at the gym to receive them.
Buy clothes which you’ll be able to fit into once you lose a few kilos. That, pretty, tight black dress would look great on you, if you only managed to lose some weight and fit into it.
So go ahead, buy it and stock it up, ready to be worn on that fateful day, when you’ve finally achieved your weight loss goals and can seamlessly fit into it and look sexy as hell!
Weird Way #3
The Good Ol’ Buddy System
There are so many reasons you should have a workout buddy. It helps a lot to have a support system of people who are showing up at the same place and pursuing the same goals as you. When you suffer that inevitable lapse of motivation, they’ll be there to perk you up.
Of course, you don’t want to let your mates down by not showing up. You can even take turns driving each other to the gym. That way it works out for both of you and you’ll have a reason to get up in the morning and get out of the house because you have to pick your friend up.

Imagine Your Most Embarrassing Photos On Social Media
This is a hack and you need a friend you can trust to implement this hack. Have a close friend keep embarrassing ‘before’ pictures of you with them with the explicit instructions to release those picture on social media if you don’t stick with your workout plans. Absolutely medieval, right?
But it will work!
Weird Way #5
Listen to songs on the way that make your car dance
Load up your music player with your favourites and put them on when you’re feeling too tired to change into your workout clothes. More often than not, you’ll perk up and feel ready to work out.
Also, load up your favourite workout playlist in the car and play it on the way to the gym. You start dancing in your car itself even before going to the gym and you’ll be dancing all the way to the gym. If you’re dancing and in the mood to keep at it before you even get to the gym, you know you’re going to kill it once you’re there!
Weird Way #6
Turn your ‘shoulds’ into ‘wants’
If you keep going to the gym and you feel miserable because you ‘have to’ do this, you might want to implement a small change in your mindset.
Understand that you don’t ‘have’ to do this, you ‘get’ to do this. You ‘get’ to become a better version of yourself, physically and mentally.
You want to, don’t you? You don’t have to do this, you chose to do this because you want to.
Weird Way #7
Hold your rewards hostage
That oh-so-enticing chocolate cake in the fridge, that new bottle of Red you’ve got stocked up in your liquor cabinet, hold all of that hostage. Maybe get your significant other to hold it hostage for you.
You only get it after you’ve finished your workouts and you’ve sweated away those calories and all your troubles and worries. Maybe plan a trip to your favourite restaurant once you’ve completed your workout! Go on, you deserve this reward! Remember not to go overboard with it though.
