Monsoon and the rain is here!!
All I want to do right now is curl up in a little ball, sit down next to a window and read a good book. Working out doesn’t really come into the picture at all right now.
But is that a good thing?
Monsoon in general is cold, and damp.
But to my surprise, I found out recently, that working out in the rain is very good for you!!
A Sports Medicine Journal from Japan quoted a study that concluded that working out in the rain increases the strain that you put your body through. Which means that you end up burning more fat working out in the rain, as opposed to working out while dry.
Doctors also say that working out in the rain also has potential to increase your immune system, because you force your body to sustain itself in hard conditions. The study also noted that the participants lost more weight than normal, even when they were not at their optimal performance during their workouts.
How the Study worked
The study took seven guys and put them in climatic chambers that replicate weather conditions and recorded their physiological responses. The participants ran in cold, rain-like weather conditions versus no rain for 30 minutes, measuring breathing, skin temperature, oxygen consumption, muscle exertion and stress levels. It was found those worked out in the rain trained harder, used higher levels of oxygen and and burned off a little more energy.
Rain workouts to try
There are a variety of regimens to try out when it comes to exercising in the rains, you can run or simply jog. You see those jungle gyms outside kindergartens? You could even get a dynamic workout in using that jungle gym. No one will be using it in the rain, and it’ll be tons of fun too!
Cycling is apt for the rains, since you use more effort to pedal in such weather, you burn more calories. It’s tones the calves and thigh muscles. But its important to shield yourself from getting a viral fever or even the common cold. Even though working out in the rain might be fun, it still has the potential to make you seriously sick. So remember to dry yourself out immediately after coming back home, and try not to jump into a hot shower. Drastic changes in body temperature can also make you fall sick.
If you don’t mind a little rain on you, place the gym equipment in the rain. You can adapt a an elliptical cross trainer for use as long as it’s waterproof. There are such garden gyms available.
Working out in the rain can be a lot of fun, provided you take proper measures to stay safe and protect your body from cold and fever!!
